By the way: I think it is worthwhile to consider that the self-destruction, pain and suffering, which is depicted in the movie in a very physical way, are metaphors which can be interpreted individually. There is an audio of Osho, where he says we need danger to really become alive but he points out that that quality can also be experienced psychologically and spiritually, not just physically.
Funnily, if death anxiety leads to escapism from risk taking for a false sense of security, that will actually make life appear much shorter compared to a thrilling life, where time tends to extend subjectively. Thus, escapism actually leads to an "earlier" death. Deep down, these people know that they waste their life, causing the secret envy and the tendency to shame those who excel to avoid facing their own reality.
